Southend United presented with their sixth winding-up petition

Southend United FC has been issued with another winding up petition by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). HMRC’s stricter approach to dealing with football clubs has seen the League Two side face similar financial problems with HMRC over the last four years.

The petition relates to an unpaid tax bill and will be the club’s sixth petition in four years. Southend United were last taken to court by HMRC on 18 March 2013, however, the club were able to pay the debt on that instance and the petition was duly dismissed by the court.

The petition has been listed for the High Court in London on Monday 24 June 2013 where the football club could be wound up if the petition debt remains unpaid.
