It recently emerged in court that HM Revenue & Customs has issued 25 petitions to wind up football clubs in the past two years. In what now seems almost to be a campaign against smaller football clubs, HMRC has served it’s latest football club winding up petition against Kettering Town Football Club Management Ltd.
The first hearing is due to be held at the Companies Court, Rolls Building at 10.30am on February 6.The amount due to HMRC has not been disclosed at this stage but the sums claimed are likely to be substantial.
An HMRC spokesman has said: “We cannot comment on specific cases due to taxpayer confidentiality. However, ensuring tax is paid in full and on time should be at the centre of football’s business strategy just as it should be for any other enterprise.
“HMRC does not initiate winding up football clubs lightly, however we will not hesitate to do so when that is the right way to protect the country’s tax revenues and other creditors.”
Kettering Town chairman Imraan Ladak has said he is confident a deal can be done with HMRC.
