Newry City FC hit by winding-up petition

THE future of Newry City Football Club looks very uncertain after a winding up order against the club was granted.

Destination Newry reports that the petition is due to be heard in the High Court on 6th September and as a result, the club’s Belfast Telegraph Championship One opener against Loughgall has been postponed.

The club have long been having public financial difficulties and it now looks as though the situation may have came to a head as the IFA Championship Executive Committee met today (Friday) and ruled that the club are not permitted to begin the 2012/13 campaign.

“It is a matter of public record that Newry City FC Limited are the subject of a ‘winding up petition’ due to be heard in the High Court on 6 September, 2012,” read a statement from the committee. “The Committee determined it appropriate that the Belfast Telegraph Championship One fixture between Newry City and Loughgall, which was due to be played on Saturday 11 August 2012 (tomorrow) be postponed to allow Newry City FC Ltd time to clarify their position.”

Such a petition had been rumoured to be pending as early as May when the club missed a deadline to pay former manager Gerry Flynn £25,000 that had been awarded to him for wrongful dismissal. It is certainly uneasy times for the club after manager Pat McGibbon resigned earlier this month, citing personal reasons just a day after his side had thrashed a Glenavon XI 6-0 at Mourneview Park.

As late as last night the club’s playing staff had been training in preparation for Saturday’s anticipated league opener but their futures, along with that of the entire club, is now under much doubt just over a year after they were relegated from Northern Ireland’s top flight.
